10 Bulawayo Schools Compete at World Robotics Olympiad
Ten schools from Bulawayo recently battled it out at the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO), showcasing innovative solutions designed to address Zimbabwe’s most pressing challenges. Held under the theme “Robotics Meets Culture,” the competition challenged learners to develop robotic technologies aimed at solving real-world problems in agriculture, business, community development, ICT, education and finance.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Director of Provincial Education Services highlighted that Zimbabwe’s heritage-based education system is grounded in the nation’s identity and aligns with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which recognises that the country’s future lies in empowering young people with entrepreneurial and ICT skills. He noted that robotics education is becoming an inclusive platform across Zimbabwe, equipping learners with practical skills to address community needs. Students presented a variety of innovative projects, including robotics solutions for firefighting and moisture monitoring, demonstrating creativity and technical excellence in tackling local challenges.
The National Coordinator of the World Robot Olympiad, Mrs Victoria Nxumalo, said the competition is designed not only to promote the participation of the girl child in science and technology but also to harness and advance skills development among school-going children, who represent the future leadership of Zimbabwe.

The Guest of Honour, the Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. D. Phuthi, officiated at the event. He emphasised that the Ministry’s vision is to create an ecosystem in which young people can explore their potential and contribute to building a digitally empowered Zimbabwe. He commended the organisers, noting that the competition aligns well with the Government’s vision and development thrust.
In the competition results, Lone Scientist Primary School won first prize in the Elementary Category, Masiyaphambili Junior School claimed top honours in the Junior Category and Agape College secured first place in the Senior Category. Agape College was also declared the provincial champions for Bulawayo.
